The arrival of the Duotone Crest SLS actually makes the position of the Crest D/LAB clearer rather than replacing it. The SLS takes the proven Crest riding concept into a more accessible construction; the Crest D/LAB remains the premium performance version for riders who place the greatest value on low drag, low weight, stiffness, immediate response and the cleanest possible connection to Duotone's D/LAB tail system.

There is another important difference: the D/LAB range extends all the way from 550 to 1200 cm², including the specialist 550 and 675 sizes that are not offered in the Crest SLS range. For lighter riders, powerful surf and high-speed prone or wing sessions, that gives the D/LAB a performance territory of its own.

Crest D/LAB now that the Crest SLS exists

The Crest D/LAB arrived first and established the shape and riding character that the later Crest SLS is built around. The SLS launch should therefore not be read as a replacement for the D/LAB.

A better way to look at the range is:

• Crest SLS: the more accessible route into the Crest concept, with strong performance, a durable SLS construction and compatibility with Duotone's modular AL 3BS system.
• Crest D/LAB: the premium route for experienced riders who want the lightest, most direct and lowest-drag interpretation of the Crest, together with the full D/LAB tail platform and the smaller 550 and 675 performance sizes.

What does the Crest D/LAB feel like?

The easiest way to understand the Crest is to place it between a dedicated surf foil and a dedicated glide foil.

A pure surf foil can turn incredibly tightly but may require more rider input to connect weaker sections. A high-aspect glide foil can pump and carry for a very long way but may feel more drawn-out through a tight turn. The Crest sits between those two extremes.

It has enough efficiency to pump across a flat section, connect another wave or keep moving through a weak bump, but when you bank the foil over it still wants to turn. That balance is the reason Crest works so well for riders who do not want to choose between carving and glide every time they go foiling.

The D/LAB construction sharpens that character further. Rider input feels immediate, the foil changes direction with very little sense of unnecessary mass and the low-drag build rewards experienced riders who actively pump, carve and move the foil around beneath them.

Moustache curvature and upturned tips

The Crest's distinctive planform is central to how it rides. Rather than using a simple flat or continuously curved span, it features Duotone's moustache-style curvature with swept-back, subtly upturned tips.

On the water, this translates into a foil that rolls readily into a turn without becoming nervous. The upturned tips are particularly useful when riding waves because they allow more aggressive bank angles and help the foil recover when a wingtip briefly breaches the surface.

For prone and freefly riders, this means you can use more of the wave face without constantly protecting the outer tip. For Foil Assist riders it creates a foil that remains playful even when the motor allows you to connect much longer sections.

Stall-friendly profile

Crest is not designed purely around high-speed efficiency. Its profile retains useful lift as speed falls, which gives it a much more forgiving lower end than many performance foils.

The important point is that the newer Crest SLS has not made the Crest D/LAB obsolete. It has simply widened the audience for the Crest design. If the extra cost of D/LAB is not important and you want the crispest, lowest-drag version, the D/LAB remains the top choice.

Who should choose the Crest D/LAB?

We would recommend the Crest D/LAB primarily to confident intermediate through expert foilers who already understand how much difference front-wing response, tail choice and foil drag make to their riding.

It is particularly strong for:

• Prone foiling: arguably the most natural Crest discipline, with enough pumping efficiency to connect waves and enough manoeuvrability to surf properly once you get there.
• Wave wing foiling and freefly: excellent when the wing is flagged and you want the foil to feel surf-led rather than locked into a straight line.
• Foil Assist: efficient enough to extend range while retaining a playful, carveable feel once the motor is reduced or switched off.
• Wake foiling: good pumping, forgiving stall behaviour and quick turning make the Crest highly relevant behind a boat.
• Parawing and smaller downwind crossover: particularly in the 1050 and 1200 where extra area provides more low-end support.

Who may be better with the Crest SLS?

The Crest SLS makes a great deal of sense if you want the Crest's medium-aspect handling, pumping and manoeuvrability but do not specifically need the D/LAB construction.

For many regular wingfoilers, the SLS will offer a very attractive balance of performance, durability and cost. The D/LAB is easier to justify when you are already riding at a level where reduced drag, lower weight and more immediate response are things you actively notice and value.

The choice should therefore be based on your riding rather than assuming that the newer SLS is automatically an upgrade. In Duotone's hierarchy, D/LAB remains the premium construction.

Which Crest D/LAB size should you choose?

550

The most specialised Crest. Choose the 550 if you are an experienced rider using plenty of speed and energy from the wave or wing and want minimum front-wing area. It is particularly relevant for high wind, larger or more powerful surf and advanced riders who want an exceptionally free foil.

675

The 675 remains distinctly performance-focused but provides more usable lift than the 550. It suits lighter riders, faster prone sessions and powered winging where agility and low drag matter more than easy low-speed take-off.

800

For many capable foilers the 800 is where the Crest concept really comes together. It is small enough to feel quick and highly manoeuvrable but retains enough area and stall resistance to pump and connect sections efficiently.

925

The 925 is perhaps the easiest recommendation for an experienced rider wanting one Crest to cover several disciplines. It gives noticeably more low-end support than the 800 without making the foil feel excessively large or slow through turns.

1050

The 1050 is ideal when you want the Crest character with more lift. It works particularly well for larger riders, lighter wing conditions, Foil Assist and anyone wanting easier starts while retaining a foil that still wants to turn.

1200

The 1200 extends Crest into lower-energy conditions. It is the choice for light-wind support, larger riders and crossover into parawing or smaller-bump downwind use where a 925 or 1050 would demand more speed or pumping input.

Choosing the right Crest tail

Tail choice can substantially change how the Crest feels, and this is one of the strongest reasons to buy into the D/LAB system.

Monobloc Tail S D/LAB – surf, swell and flow

Pair the Crest with the Duotone Monobloc Tail S D/LAB when your priorities are prone, surf, swell connection and fluid pumping.

The S configuration creates the more surf-orientated Crest setup: smooth, connected and easy to carry between sections. For riders buying Crest primarily because they want to surf rather than simply foil fast, this is the tail we would look at first.

Monobloc Tail PX D/LAB – speed and powered riding

Choose the Duotone Monobloc Tail PX D/LAB when you want less drag, more speed and a more reactive feel for winging or Foil Assist.

The PX direction makes sense when there is external power available and you want the foil to accelerate cleanly. It gives the Crest a noticeably more performance-led powered character.

Crest vs Glide 3.0

If your decision is really between Crest and maximum pump-and-glide efficiency, look carefully at the Duotone Glide 3.0 D/LAB.

The Glide 3.0 moves to an aspect ratio of around 12 and is much more deliberately focused on efficient pumping, connecting bumps, downwind and parawing. It remains surprisingly manoeuvrable for its span, but the Crest is still the better choice when carving freedom and wave interaction matter as much as covering distance.

In simple terms:

• Choose Crest D/LAB for surf, prone, freefly, Foil Assist and manoeuvrability with good pump and glide.
• Choose Glide 3.0 D/LAB when pump, glide and low-energy efficiency come first.

Crest vs Carve 3.0

The Duotone Carve 3.0 D/LAB is the more aggressive surf and freestyle direction. It is better suited to riders who prioritise tighter carving and a more radical turning style.

The Crest carries better between sections and is easier to pump from wave to wave. If your session is as much about connecting waves as carving the one you are already on, Crest will often be the more versatile choice.
